Equipment identification

Equipment identification is the confirmation of the asset’s model, serial number and relevant variant or configuration before making a service decision.

Last updated:

A general description of the equipment may not distinguish the component or procedure required. Identification ties the reported symptoms to the actual asset. A readable data plate, control display and installation view can provide complementary context, but uncertain details still need confirmation.

How it works in field service

The capture request asks for an accessible type or serial plate, the relevant display and wider installation context. The customer, operator or technician records those views from a safe position. A reviewer checks legibility and confirms the model and variant before interpreting the fault display or preparing parts.

If a label is obscured or unreadable, request an authorised alternative rather than guessing. Do not ask an unqualified person to remove unsafe covers or expose wiring for a photograph. Keep confirmed identifiers with the job so the attending technician can verify the asset on arrival. Equipment identity informs preparation; it does not, by itself, establish the cause of a fault or guarantee that a proposed component is correct.
