What goes into a cost per visit
Use figures you can evidence. Where operations and finance disagree, take the lower one — a conservative case survives scrutiny.

Only count the categories a visual assessment could realistically change. Everything else stays in the plan.

- Out of contract or another party's responsibility

Common questions about visit cost
- How much does an unnecessary field-service visit cost?
- A defensible cost per visit includes the technician's fully loaded labour for the whole door-to-door duration, vehicle running cost and mileage, the overhead carried by a field hour, and the revenue-earning work that engineer could not do instead. Organisations that calculate this properly usually find the figure is higher than the one quoted informally, because travel and lost capacity are left out of the informal number.
- What is the cost of a truck roll?
- A truck roll is a single dispatch of a technician to a site. Its cost is the same calculation as above, and its waste depends entirely on the outcome: a visit that fixes the fault is productive, a visit that produces no work — or has to be repeated because of a missing part or the wrong skill set — is the cost worth targeting.
- How much can remote visual inspection potentially save?
- That depends on how many of your requests are currently dispatched on a verbal description and what proportion of those change outcome once someone can see the asset. There is no universal percentage, and we do not publish one. The honest approach is to measure a defined request type before and after, using your own visit cost.
