Avoidable service visit

An avoidable service visit is attendance that could reasonably have been prevented through sufficient information, safe remote resolution or better preparation.

Last updated:

The classification depends on what the team could know and do before scheduling. A visit is not avoidable merely because no repair was performed. Physical investigation, safety requirements or authorised checks may make attendance necessary even when the equipment is ultimately found to be operating normally.

How it works in field service

A reviewer assesses guided evidence before dispatch, identifies the equipment and clarifies the reported issue. Some requests may be resolved safely without travel or referred to the responsible party. Others still need a visit, but evidence can help prepare parts, qualifications and access arrangements.

Keep remote resolutions separate from better-prepared visits and from repeat journeys caused by incomplete preparation. Record the original request, available evidence, reviewer decision and reason attendance changed. During a pilot, compare similar request types rather than assuming every received recording removes a trip. Urgent and safety-critical situations follow the organisation’s response procedures. Necessary service work remains necessary regardless of whether video is available.
