Truck roll
A truck roll is the dispatch of a service vehicle and technician to a customer or asset location for an on-site task.

The term covers travel for fault investigation, repair, maintenance or another service activity. A truck roll is not automatically wasteful: attendance may be necessary for physical work, safety or qualified inspection. The useful distinction is between required travel and travel that better information could have avoided.
How it works in field service
A service request becomes a planned visit when the team assigns a technician and vehicle. Before that decision, guided customer or site evidence can clarify the asset, symptoms and access conditions. A reviewer decides whether to resolve safely remotely, request more information or prepare attendance.
Wrong equipment details, unavailable parts or unexpected access restrictions can lead to repeat travel. Record those causes separately from visits that were necessary and properly prepared. When considering visit cost, use the operation’s evidenced travel and working time, vehicle costs and applicable overhead. Estimates are not measured savings. Do not postpone urgent or safety-critical attendance merely to obtain a recording.
