What is remote inspection software?

By Imre van Gastel · Published

Remote inspection software is the system a service organisation uses to request, collect, review and store visual evidence about an asset or fault without attending. It covers four things: defining what must be captured, getting the evidence from the person at the site, presenting it for review, and keeping it as a record attached to the asset or case.

The four parts to look for

A product that only handles one of these leaves the rest to email and memory.

  • Capture definition — the sequence of clips, photos and questions
  • Collection — how the person at the site submits, and what that costs them
  • Review — a case view a qualified person can assess and act on
  • Record — retention, search and attachment to the job or asset

What separates it from video messaging

Anyone can receive a video. The difference is that the service organisation decides in advance what evidence a case must contain, so cases are comparable, auditable and safe to make decisions on.

What separates it from a field-service app

A field-service management system schedules and records work done by your own technicians. Remote inspection software collects evidence before or around that work, frequently from people who will never have a login — customers, site operators, subcontractors. The two are complementary, and the evidence should end up attached to the job in the system of record.

Practical selection questions

Ask what the person at the site has to install, how capture behaves on a weak connection, whether the capture sequence can be changed by the service team without development work, how long evidence is retained and where, and how a case reaches the technician who attends.
